Hydraulic Propulsion Units are available from 35 to 2,000
HP with or without a nozzle to help concentrate forward trust
and maximize bollard pull. The hydraulic hydrostatic transmission
provides fully proportional propeller speed control in forward
and reverse while the engine runs at constant speed.
Many custom solutions and options are available, including
tilt of the outdrive, hydraulic propeller depth adjustment, remote
control options, and choice of engines. Or, as in the below image,
the engine can be turned sideways to reduce the deck foot print
leaving more room for work and cargo.
- The WORKMASTER style provides for 180 degrees steering and
is for general propulsion applications.
- The THRUSTMASTER style is freely azimuthing with endless
360 degrees steering.
Both types of propulsion units are used for double-ended river
ferries, military and construction site landing craft, and similar
applications where debris and bottoming in shallows are frequent
problems. The system is protected by a valve which kicks out
when the propeller is suddenly blocked, minimizing damage to
the engine, transmission, and lower unit.
All units can be configured as deck-mounted packaged units, deck-mounted mini-skid units or transom-mounted units.
The mini-skid and transom-mount styles separate the engine
and transmission unit from the lower unit and allow remote mounting
of the engine, either above or below deck in any convenient space.
Short runs can be made with flexible hydraulic hose while long
runs can be piped with standard marine hydraulic plumbing options.

An earlier Thrustmaster
style with lateral mounted engine and no nozzle. This allows
deck mounting with a smaller footprint so that more deck space
can be used for cargo. |
OD150N units under
production for an Army Corp of Engineers project. Thrustmaster
has an impressive record of manufacturing and delivering over
1000 OD150N Propulsion Units for several military services around
the world.

Current OD150N for
British Military. Note the smaller nozzle for speed and more
involved control panel. These units were also customer engineered
with sound attenuation, remote cable control, mounted fuel pumps,
and manual back-up for tilting the unit up without having to
start the engine. |
Workmaster
(180 degree steering) with Optional Cab and Navigation Mast plusLift
feature for varying vessel draught. Like all Thrustmaster hydraulic
units the hydrostatic transmission allows going from forward
to reverse without having to wait for the engine or propeller
to slow down.
